The racing was fast and furious at Cordova Dragway Park in early June. Site of the Midwest FFW Nationals, the track conditions were ideal for a weekend of great racing. Dan Schoneck certainly took advantage of the opportunity in the qualifying rounds of Renegade class. Turning in back to back runs of 7.79 and 7.786 was good enough for not only top qualifier but he also reset the Renegade speed record @ 183.87 mph with only a 359 ci small block! Dan was unstoppable as his immaculate orange Mustang with an intercooled F-2 reverse drive ProCharger cleaned house all the way to the finals. In an all ProCharger final, Dan experienced mechanical problems against Joe Robinson’s F-2 equipped car. Joe scored the win with ProCharger giving the competition a one-two punch.
We are midway through the summer of ‘05 and nobody has touched David Reese’s records yet for the Outlaw Racing Street Car Association (ORSCA). David’s 69 Camaro with an F-3 ProCharger equipped 480 cubic inch big block Chevy currently holds both ends of the record for Limited Street. His best time of 4.868 in the 1/8 mile was set back in April at Memphis Motorsports Park. He also holds the top speed record for this class at 153.10 at Emerald Coast Dragway, which he set way back in March of 2004.
Kurt Gallant turned everyone’s heads in the ProCharger Renegade class at Maple Grove with an outstanding set of two victories in one weekend. Despite the hot, humid weather, Kurt started off by taking the Michigan win over Mike Post closing the book on that race. Then he proceeded to easily wade his way through the 13-car field by posting eight passes within 400 hundredths of a second and 1 mph. The competition did everything they could to beat him but all they took home was broken parts. Kurt’s switch to the ProCharger team with a self-contained F-1R has allowed him to go racing (and winning) with unbeatable consistency and reliability. Almost half way through the season, Kurt is now the points leader in the extremely competitive EFI Renegade class for the NMRA.
John Urist showed up at Tulsa to test his new F-3C ProCharger before the NMRA race at ATI’s home racetrack in July. He obviously studied for the test as he promptly took the top mph honors during qualifying at 186.77 before going into eliminations. During a first round bye run, John promptly blew away the top speed he had just set by going 193 mph on little tires with temperatures over 90 degrees!. After taking out the competition in the semifinals, he was set to go despite struggling with traction issues. After the launch, John’s torque converter just couldn’t take anymore. His runner up finish was pretty good considering they were only testing. It must be noted that John was in NMRA trim at this Clash of the Titans race meaning he was 75 pounds overweight. Kansas City here he comes!
Phil Hines also had some unfinished business in the Super Street Outlaw class from Michigan’s rainout to take care of at Maple Grove. Stepping up from the D-3R he used in Michigan to be #1 Qualifier, he reported the torque developed by his new self-contained F-3C was phenomenal. He made it to the finals but in the end, all that extra torque outran the tires giving Phil the runner up spot. Phil is going to be a very serious contender as he dials in this awesome new combination.
The rainout from Englishtown Fun Ford Weekend brought Phil Clemmons to Old Dominion as the #1 Qualifier in Drag Radial as reported in last month’s race results. The rains came again to wash out the Richmond race but not until the Old Dominion race was settled. In the eliminations, Phil had a bye in the first round setting him up with Adam Louramore in the second round. Phil quickly put Adam’s nitrous car on the trailer and advanced to the final against Carl Michael. Phil’s intercooled F-1R won handily with an 8.254 @ 170.56 against Carl’s 8.41 @ 158.35. Before the rains shut down the race, Phil posted the top qualifier time with a 8.209 putting him more than a 1/10th ahead of the pack.
Tulsa Raceway Park was the scene for another Clash of the Titans weekend on June 18th. Crede Young brought his 88 Mustang equipped with an intercooled F-2 ProCharger up from Texas to do battle in the True 10.5 class. After qualifying 3rd, Crede unleashed a killer string of steady low 8 second runs to win the event. The consistency and reliability of his ProCharger equipped car showed with 6 runs separated by only 0.09 seconds!
Ray Sanchez is working with the latest technology available in his reverse drive F-3R ProCharged Camaro. Sporting a 403 cid engine, he is currently undergoing tests with some very impressive early numbers. His Camaro has him knocking on the door of the 200 mph club and it appears he’ll be taking it off the hinges very soon. Producing over 2300 horsepower, this potent combination is turning low seven second ET’s with a top speed of 196 mph.
Drag Radial was once again the scene for some great racing as Trace Meyer used an F-1R ProCharger to work his way through a huge 19-car field. Landing in the finals, Trace momentarily lost traction at the launch. Never one to give up, he stayed in it hard to gain on his competitor but ran out of room in the end. While taking runner up, he actually beat the winner’s mph with a 166.66 to 166.13. Trace is currently the 2005 record holder in Drag Radial for both ET an MPH. In Real Street, Jim Breese was posting consistently great 9 second times with his P-1SC-2 ProCharger all the way to the finals. He took home the runner up honors to cap off a great weekend of Michigan style racing.
Reigning back-to-back NMRA Pro 5.0 champion Don Walsh, Jr. came to Maple Grove and made a serious statement to the 13-car field. Don’s intercooled F-3 ProCharger took away the #1 Qualifier position and then started sending people home. In the finals, Walsh’s beautiful Mustang had a glitchy O2 sensor problem but it couldn’t get any closer as Don took runner up by only 1/1000th of a second! Don leaves Maple Grove as the 2005 record holder for ET, MPH and points leader in this top Pro 5.0 class as he continues his quest for a triple play.
