Q: Does it matter what type of oil
is used in my self-contained ProCharger, and are there any particular
maintenance recommendations?
A:
The oil utilized in self-contained (SC) ProCharger models is a proprietary
blend, and you should only use ProCharger SC oil in your supercharger.
Relative to superchargers lubricated
by engine oil or those with sealed bearings, this proprietary oil
delivers the benefits of cooler operation, decreased parasitic load
(resistance) and superior bearing and seal lubrication.
SC oil is economically priced at $6.95 - $8.95 per bottle (1 bottle
per oil change) and only needs to be changed every 6,000 miles (automotive/truck)
or 100 hours (marine) after initial break-in.
SC ProChargers are shipped dry from
the factory and should have 1 bottle of oil added prior to use.
Four bottles of oil are provided with each system.
When changing oil, ensure that the supercharger has been fully drained,
and that you do not overfill the supercharger. This is easily verified
with the dipstick. To avoid oil seepage, ensure that the gasket
which is supplied on the dipstick is retained, and that the dipstick
is fully tightened. An extra gasket is supplied, and gaskets are
also available from ATI.
Overfilling the supercharger is
probably the single largest concern, as it can not only result in
oil seepage, but can also damage your ProChargeršs precision bearings
and seals. Although SC maintenance is minor relative to the issues
associated with oil-fed superchargers (punching a hole in your oil
pan, worrying about clogged oil feed and drain lines, etc) they
are still very important.
Q:
What about race models?
A:
While most SC ProCharger models utilize 6 ounces of oil, the new
ProCharger SC race models (F-1 through F-4) utilize only 4 ounces
of oil. Care should be taken to not accidentally overfill a ProCharger
race model which needs only 4 ounces of oil. If you have a ProCharger
model which begins with an "F", your oil capacity is only 4 ounces,
and the bottles supplied with your order are 4 ounce bottles. All
other current self-contained ProCharger models (P-1SC, P-1SCH, D-1SC,
M-1SC, M-1SCB, M-3SC) utilize 6 ounce bottles. Please call if you
have any questions.
