Dawn Singleton is not your typical woman. It’s challenging enough to drive a car at high speeds, but she gets a ProCharged 2,200 plus horsepower boat going 170 mph in the space of 7 seconds. And this after never having raced a car (or anything else) to begin with. The story goes like this: Dawn’s husband Chris is a successful NSCA Drag Radial champ, taking the crown in 2004. While at a race, Chris talked to another racer about a drag racing boat. Chris told Dawn about the boat, and her answer to him was “No boats!” So when Chris comes driving up with a boat, Dawn exclaimed “What was it about our previous conversation that you did not understand?” Chris replied, “You’re driving the boat!”
Dawn must have been pretty mad, because her first year she took second place in her open boat class. But a subsequent accident had them both rethinking boat racing. Amazingly, they decided to move up to the Pro Mod class, which consists of safety capsule equipped boats with roots blown, alcohol fueled 1,700 horsepower motors. They had a couple of aces up their sleeve in making the move: 1) Dawn’s raw talent (she’s the first woman licensed in Pro Mod) and 2) the immense power generated by a ProCharged F-3A powered engine.
Pushing the envelope almost always proves to be a challenge at first – in this case the huge increase in power caused props to spin away. But as the pair started to get the roaring beast tamed, with the help of ProCharger’s Jim Summers, Dawn managed a solid 4th place finish her first year in the class. And she shook up the class enough to make the other racers re-think their engine-blower combinations. Look for great things from Dawn next season, as she continues her amazing journey. She will also take over the driving duties from Chris in their F-1R ProCharged big block Chevy Camaro. As they say, what goes around comes around.
