2002 Season

The 2002 season was remarkable not only for continually improving ET’s in every racing class, but also the tremendous consistency shown by these ProCharged racers. The skill, dedication and hard work of these and other racers helped make
2002 another record-breaking season

Joining LaRocca and Freeman in the 8’s in Renegade was Nick Trombetta, who ran an 8.97 ET @ 153 mph late in the season. He was also powered with an F-1R, and utilizes an automatic transmission. In the NMRA’s Super Street Outlaw class, joining Jim Blair (7.80 @ 181) in the 7’s were Mike Smith (7.83 @ 183), Jason Cohen (7.84 @ 184), Todd Fluman (7.90 @ 175) and Jason Smith (7.95 @ 175). In Super Street and FFW Street Outlaw action, Ray Sanchez (7.42 @ 190), Travis Franklin (7.47 @ 190), Joel Greathouse (7.48 @ 189), Jim Briante (7.49 @ 188), Mark Enwia (7.71 @ 187), and Wren Vanderpool (7.75 @ 176) also ran 7’s.

In Pro 5.0, 2,000+ hp is now routine, and there are 3 ProCharged Pro 5.0 cars in the 6’s. The new Gillig/Huston team recently ran a 6.64 @ 214 mph during testing in January, while Doug Mangrum (best of 6.76) was the first Pro 5.0 racer into both the 6’s and 7’s, and Don Walsh (best of 6.77) was the first into the 6’s with an automatic transmission.
In addition to industry-leading power and consistency, centrifugal supercharging also delivers the ultimate engine longevity, which allows teams to focus on racing instead of engine repair. It should also be noted that this entire group raced the full season without a single broken self-contained ProCharger, thanks to the unparalleled durability of these race superchargers.

Overall for 2002, every single supercharged Pro 5.0 racer in the 6’s, Super Street and Street Outlaw racer in the 7’s, and Renegade racer in the 8’s, was ProCharged. ATI congratulates these racers for their outstanding accomplishments and dedication to racing. For more information on the 2002 season, check out our ’02 Racing Update.
